UPM has made an investment decision to construct a 2,1 million tonne greenfield eucalyptus pulp mill near Paso de los Toros in central Uruguay. Besides the mill, the total investment of USD 3 billion also includes a pulp terminal in the port of Montevideo as well as investments in local facilities in Paso de los Toros.
Significant boost to economy and regional development. The pulp mill project is proceeding at full speed according to the planned schedule.
- Assembly phase of the new pulp mill construction in Uruguay continues and some civil works are already complete. Large loads of equipment and components arrive from the UPM Fray Bentos mill on a weekly basis.
- Most of the housing solutions for construction workers has been occupied by the contracting companies and their employees.
- At the pulp terminal in the port of Montevideo the structure and roofing of the pulp warehouse – an area of 50,000 square metres – was completed. The unloading line for the railway was also completed, whereas work continues on the port basin.
- During construction of the new tree nursery in the city of Sarandí del Yí, the structures and roofs of the greenhouses are progressing. The metal structure of the main buildings – the dining room, changing rooms and input handling area – has been installed. The construction of the cutwater embankment is complete. This will be the source of irrigation water in the nursery and will occupy 30 hectares.
